Javier: foreshortening-shading practice

Description

This was a two-fold practice piece: a new type of shading and foreshortening. I love the shading, but loathe the foreshortening.

This was based on a sketch I did in my Psych notebook last semester that I'd forgotten about, and I decided to finish it up.

About the sword:

I have modified his sword's hilt by eliminating the extended handguard. The hilt is reminiscent of the later Spanish fashion, called the cup guard. The sword is a variant of the colichemarde. More data later.

from the chest up the image works well (aside from the upper arms being too thin), and from the waist down it works, but the two halves don't quite meet in the middle right. it almost looks like the top part of the image is working with a slightly less intense perspective that would have a more gradual taper/angle; while the bottom half is going with a more intense perspective which has a more severe angle. this sort of gives it the appearance that we're looking at him through a fish-eye lens, which i think is what Writer was referring to.

also from an overhead angle like this the top of his high collar/turtleneck wouldn't be so straight across, it would have more of a curve. going be how loose it seems to fit in the profile pic you posted of him a while back, we would probably be able to see a little bit of the lower part of his face at this angle.

the shading is nice and smooth. the subtlety of the shadows and lack of deep contrasts in lights and darks give a it an almost ethereal feel.

overall good work, especially with an extreme foreshortening like this. keep up the practice :)
